Ethiopia Trip (27th Nov – 5th Dec 2007)

Ethiopia is a landlocked country, so Ethiopia is using port of surrounding countries for import and export. Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia which is safe and clean city. Addis Ababa is located on high altitude (around 500-2000 m), so quite cool weather all around year. Population of Addis Ababa is around 3.5 Million and meaning of Addis (New) Ababa (Flower) is New Flower.

Almost all countries embassies are located in Addis Ababa as city is a transition point for many countries. Many UN, AfDB, EU and other important International Organizations are located in city.

Ethiopia is the only country of Africa which was never colonized by any country. People are proud of this fact but they miss the benefits, which they might have got because of being colony of some developed country. Only Italy under leadership of Mussolini has captured Ethiopia from 1935-1941, but they were never able to hold Ethiopia for long time.

There is no functional railway line in Ethiopia, only one line is there in whole country, even they are not able to manage it. Indian consultants with railway background visited Ethiopia for giving consultancy services for putting railways in Ethiopia. But due to increase in steel prices, that project was considered unviable.

People of country side eat raw meet, which I have seen for first time in my lifetime. Other than Meat, famous local cuisine is Injira, which is made of puff flour. It mostly look like Plain Dosa. Local people eat Injira with meat, chicken, eggs and vegetables.

The USP of Ethiopia is its Coffee, Honey and Flowers which is exported to other countries. Ethiopia is famous for wine and beer, which are damn cheap and good in taste.

Currency of Ethiopia is Ethiopian Birr, 1 Ethiopian Birr is almost equal to 4.38 Indian Rupees, Ethiopia has strong currency than India, but their currency is depreciating against Indian Rupees.

Ethiopia has given two things to World, one is Coffee as Ethiopia is considered to be originator of Coffee and another is Marathon runners, which have won GOLD in Olympics for Ethiopia.

Like Kenya, Ethiopia also has rich wildlife, but Ethiopia has not promoted wildlife tourism in their country. Mostly the Ethiopian economy depends upon agriculture as manufacturing sector is still not developed much. But being rich in agriculture, there is lot of potential for manufacturing sector.

Great Rift Valley passes through Ethiopia, which is sensitive for volcanoes and earthquakes, but also very fertile. Great Rift Valley ends at Red Sea via Ethiopia. I got chance to see Great Rift Valley and lakes formed due to geological transformations.

Western parts of Ethiopia are quite unsafe, as this part of Ethiopia has boundary with Sudan and lot of migration can be seen from Sudan to Ethiopia. Other neighboring countries of Ethiopia are Somalia, Kenya, and Djibouti etc.

Famous Nile River originates from Ethiopia and ends at Mediterranean Sea after passing through Sudan and Egypt. I was unable to explore Nile River, because of limited time.

That’s what my experience about this African country. Always look forward to have same experience sharing from you.
